1. 201 Stainless Steel Sheet

201 is a low-cost alternative stainless steel that replaces nickel with manganese. It features low price and good ductility, but its anti-rust and anti-corrosion performance is the weakest among the five grades. It is extremely sensitive to moisture, salt spray and acid-base environments, and is prone to rust spots in humid conditions.

Typical Uses: Indoor decorative panels, interior door frames, ceiling decorations, indoor advertising frames, dry environment hardware accessories. Not applicable: Outdoor exposure, kitchen wet areas, coastal projects, food and chemical equipment.

2. 430 Stainless Steel Sheet

What is the main difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel sheet?

The key difference is carbon content. 316 is standard‑carbon grade; 316L is ultra‑low‑carbon (C ≤0.03 %). 316L eliminates intergranular corrosion risk after welding, no post‑weld solution annealing required. Both contain 2‑3 % molybdenum for chloride resistance. For projects with frequent welding, 316L is the preferred option.

 

Is magnetic test a reliable way to tell these grades apart?

Not fully reliable. 201, 304, 316, 316L are generally non‑magnetic, but may develop weak magnetism after cold rolling / stamping. 430 ferritic stainless steel is strongly magnetic. Magnetism can be used for preliminary screening, but PMI spectroscopy is the only accurate identification method.

 

Can I use 201 sheet for outdoor projects to save cost?

Not recommended. 201 has low nickel and high manganese, poor corrosion resistance. It will develop rust spots quickly under rain, humidity or salt‑spray. 201 is only suitable for dry indoor decoration.

 

430 is magnetic, does that mean its quality is worse than 304?
