Key Differences
Molybdenum (Mo): 316L contains 2-3% Mo; 304L has none. This is the core reason for 316L's enhanced corrosion resistance.
Corrosion Resistance: 316L excels in saltwater, brine, and harsh chemicals (like chlorides, sulfuric/phosphoric acids); 304L is for milder conditions, notes Alliant Metals.
Carbon Content: Both are 'L' (Low Carbon, max 0.03%), improving weldability and resisting intergranular corrosion after welding compared to standard 304/316.
Cost: 304L is generally more economical.
When to Use Which
Choose 304L for: General kitchenware, food processing (mild), architectural trim, containers, and applications where cost is a major factor and extreme corrosion isn't expected, says Kloeckner Metals.
Choose 316L for: Marine environments, shipbuilding, chemical processing, pharmaceutical equipment, medical devices, and food processing with salt/acids (like citrus), due to its superior pitting/crevice corrosion resistance, according to Terra Universal and Nordic Steel.
