Key Characteristics
Composition: Iron with ~11% Chromium, low Carbon & Nitrogen, stabilized with Titanium.
Type: Ferritic stainless steel.
Corrosion Resistance: Good in mildly corrosive atmospheres and against gas corrosion, thanks to a passive chromium oxide layer, but can show light surface rust.
Heat Resistance: Excellent oxidation resistance up to high temperatures (around 800°C), crucial for exhaust systems.
Weldability & Formability: Very good, allowing for complex shapes and welding without filler rods, similar to low-alloy steels.
Cost: A low-cost option for corrosion-resistant stainless steel.
Why It's Used for Exhausts
High-Temp Performance: Resists heat and oxidation in the hot exhaust gas flow.
Durability: Titanium addition prevents carbide formation, stopping intergranular corrosion in service.
Manufacturing: Easy to form and weld into complex exhaust parts like mufflers, pipes, and catalytic converters.
Corrosion Barrier: Offers better corrosion protection than standard carbon steel, extending exhaust life.
