Key Characteristics:

Type: Martensitic Stainless Steel (magnetic).

Composition: ~12% Chromium, low Carbon, no Nickel.

Properties: High strength, hardness, good wear resistance, moderate corrosion resistance.

Heat Treatment: Hardenable by quenching and tempering; achieves maximum corrosion resistance when polished after heat treatment.

Limitations: Lower corrosion resistance than austenitic grades, poor ductility at sub-zero temps, strength drops at high temps (400-580°C).

Processing & Fabrication:

Machinability: Good in annealed or hardened/tempered state; gets difficult when very hard.

Welding: Possible with pre-heat and post-weld treatment (annealing) to prevent cracking.

Temperature Limits: Avoid tempering between 400-580°C (temper brittleness) and use in sub-zero conditions.

Common Applications:

Cutlery, fasteners (bolts, nuts), steam/gas turbine blades, surgical/dental tools, pump/valve parts, oil well balls/seats.
