1. What Is SUS430?
SUS430 is the Japanese Industrial Standard designation for a ferritic stainless steel containing 16.00-18.00% chromium and no significant nickel. It is specified in JIS G4303 for stainless steel bars and in JIS G4304 for hot-rolled stainless steel plate, sheet and strip, with a cold-rolled counterpart in JIS G4305. SUS430 is the JIS equivalent of ASTM type 430 (UNS S43000) and of EN 1.4016, and it corresponds to grade 10Cr17 in GB/T 3280 and GB/T 4237. Because it contains no nickel, it is naturally magnetic and considerably less expensive than austenitic grades such as SUS304.
2. Chemical Composition (JIS G4304)
The table below lists the specified limits for SUS430 per JIS G4304. Iron makes up the balance.
| Element | Limit (wt %) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.12 max |
| Silicon (Si) | 1.00 max |
| Manganese (Mn) | 1.00 max |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.040 max |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.030 max |
| Chromium (Cr) | 16.00-18.00 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 0.60 max |
3. Mechanical Properties and Key Characteristics
Per JIS G4304, SUS430 plate has a minimum tensile strength of 450 MPa and a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa, with elongation requirements that depend on thickness, typically 22% for thin plate. ASTM A240 specifies slightly different minimums of 415 MPa tensile and 205 MPa yield for the equivalent type 430. Key characteristics of SUS430 are:
Magnetic in all conditions because it contains no significant nickel
Cannot be hardened by heat treatment; strength increases only by cold working
Good formability: bends easily and is suitable for deep drawing and spinning
Good resistance to oxidation and mild corrosion; lower resistance to salt and strong acids than SUS304 or SUS316
Excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, unlike austenitic grades
4. Common Applications
Appliances: dishwasher liners, washing machine panels, range hoods and oven trim
Automotive: decorative trim and exhaust system components such as mufflers and manifolds
Architecture: interior panels, railings and decorative trim in mild environments
Kitchenware: cutlery, sinks and food processing equipment where exposure is mild
Industrial and commercial: fasteners, brackets and enclosures where economy is important
5. When to Choose SUS430
SUS430 is the right choice when cost is a major factor but stainless steel properties are still needed, when the service environment is indoor or only moderately corrosive, and when good formability and workability are required. It should be avoided where the component is welded and exposed to corrosive media, where chlorides or saltwater are present, and where maximum corrosion resistance is required. For those conditions, SUS304, SUS316 or a stabilized ferritic grade is more appropriate.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does SUS in SUS430 mean? SUS is the JIS prefix for stainless steel, used in standards such as JIS G4303, G4304 and G4305. The number 430 identifies the grade within the JIS system.
Is SUS430 the same as 430 stainless steel? Yes. SUS430 is the JIS designation of the same alloy known as type 430 in ASTM (UNS S43000) and 1.4016 in EN 10088. The specified composition and properties are equivalent for practical purposes.
Why is SUS430 cheaper than SUS304? Because SUS430 contains no nickel, the most expensive alloying element in austenitic grades. SUS304 contains 8.00-10.50% nickel, which significantly increases its raw material cost.
Is SUS430 magnetic? Yes. As a ferritic stainless steel with no significant nickel, SUS430 is magnetic in all conditions, which is useful for magnetic sorting and detection applications.
Can SUS430 be welded? It can be welded for non-critical applications with low heat input. For critical welded assemblies exposed to corrosive media, a stabilized ferritic grade or an austenitic grade such as SUS304 is recommended, because welding can reduce the corrosion resistance and toughness of unstabilized ferritic grades.
Is SUS430 suitable for kitchen sinks? Yes. SUS430 is widely used for kitchen sinks and cutlery in mild service. For coastal or harsh environments, SUS304 is preferred because of its superior resistance to pitting and staining.
