SUS430 at a Glance
SUS430 is a widely used ferritic stainless steel containing 16.00 – 18.00% chromium and no intentional nickel addition. Because nickel is omitted, the grade is significantly less expensive than austenitic grades such as 304 while still offering good atmospheric corrosion resistance, excellent formability and a high-quality surface finish. SUS430 is magnetic at room temperature, which is an advantage in certain applications such as induction cookware and magnetic sensors. It is commonly specified for architectural decoration, household appliances, tableware and automotive trim.
Chemical Composition per JIS G4304 / G4303
| Element | Content (wt%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.12 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.00 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 1.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.040 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.030 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 16.00 – 18.00 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |
The composition limits follow JIS G4304 for hot-rolled stainless steel plate, sheet and strip and JIS G4303 for bars. The same grade is designated EN 1.4016, UNS S43000 and GB 10Cr17 in other systems.

Performance Advantages
Good atmospheric corrosion resistance in indoor and dry outdoor environments
Excellent cold formability, suitable for bending, stamping, spinning and roll forming
High surface quality that polishes well, supporting bright and mirror finishes
About 30% lower material cost than grade 304 in typical market conditions, because no nickel is added
Stable magnetic properties, useful for components that must be attracted or detected magnetically
Typical Applications
In architectural decoration, SUS430 is used for wall panels, handrails, door frames, elevator interiors and curtain wall details where the environment is not severely corrosive. In household appliances, it is common in refrigerator door liners, oven inner walls, dishwasher interiors, washing machine drums and range hoods. It is also used for tableware, kitchen utensils, automotive trim, heat exchanger fins, solar water heater components and chemical equipment serving mild corrosion environments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SUS430 replace 304 stainless steel? In non-corrosive environments such as indoor decoration and dry-air equipment, SUS430 can replace 304 at lower cost. In corrosive environments such as coastal areas, acidic media or chloride exposure, its corrosion resistance is significantly lower than 304, and substitution is not recommended.
Why does SUS430 rust in coastal areas? Coastal salt spray contains high concentrations of chloride ions that can penetrate the passive oxide film of SUS430 and cause pitting corrosion. For coastal applications, a molybdenum-bearing grade such as 316 is recommended, or the surface should receive additional passivation and protective maintenance.
What are the welding precautions for SUS430? Use matching ferritic filler such as ER430, control heat input to about 120 J/mm or less to avoid grain coarsening, and note that no preheating is required for thin sections. For thick plates of 10 mm and above, preheat to 100 – 200 °C. Post-weld annealing at 750 – 800 °C can restore toughness and corrosion resistance in critical assemblies.
Is SUS430 suitable for high-temperature applications? SUS430 is suitable for medium-temperature service up to about 600 °C. Above this temperature, oxidation rates increase noticeably and grain growth may cause embrittlement. For sustained high-temperature service above 800 °C, heat-resistant austenitic grades such as 309S or 310S are more appropriate.
How can the surface finish of SUS430 be improved? Polish progressively with abrasive belts of increasing fineness, for example 120# to 240# to 400# to 600#, then apply passivation treatment with a dilute nitric acid solution to form a dense oxide film. This improves both gloss and corrosion resistance.
Is SUS430 food-safe? SUS430 is widely used for tableware, cutlery and kitchen appliances and is considered suitable for food contact in normal use. However, for strongly acidic or salty foods, austenitic grades such as 304 are preferred because of their higher corrosion resistance.
