What is UNS N08904 material?
UNS N08904, commonly known as 904L, is a low-carbon, high-alloy super austenitic stainless steel designed to provide superior corrosion resistance in harsh environments. It contains high levels of nickel (25%), molybdenum (4.5%), chromium, and copper, making it highly resistant to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and reducing acids such as sulfuric acid.
What is the equivalent material to EN 1.4539?
EN 1.4539 is primarily equivalent to 904L stainless steel (AISI 904L) and UNS N08904. It is a highly alloyed super austenitic stainless steel known for superior corrosion resistance, especially in sulfuric acid and high-chloride environments. Other equivalent designations include X1NiCrMoCu25-20-5 (EN name) and Werkstoff 1.4539.

Is EN 1.4539 stainless steel magnetic?
No, EN 1.4539 (also known as 904L) stainless steel is non-magnetic in its annealed condition, though it may become slightly magnetic if subjected to cold-working, such as bending or forming. As a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel, its austenite crystal structure makes it inherently non-magnetic, which is also a property that contributes to its excellent corrosion resistance.
UNS N08904 Heat Treatment
904L stainless steel should be solution annealed (solution treated) between 1095°C and 1150°C (2000°F and 2100°F) followed by rapid cooling, typically water quenching. This treatment ensures optimal corrosion resistance by dissolving any carbides or intermetallic phases that might have formed during processing, and retaining the elements in solid solution.
EN 1.4539 Stainless Steel Corrosion Resistance
UNS N08904 / EN 1.4539 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, withstanding moderate concentrations and temperatures of sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and nitric acid, seawater and chloride-rich environments, and both oxidizing and reducing chemical environments. Compared to 316L and 904L stainless steels, N08904 performs better in resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in high-chloride or acidic solutions.
Possible alternative grades for 904L stainless steel
|
Grade |
Reasons for choosing grade 904L |
|
316L |
A lower cost alternative, but with much lower corrosion resistance. |
|
6Mo |
A higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is needed. |
|
2205 |
A very similar corrosion resistance, with the 2205 having higher mechanical strength, and at a lower cost to 904L. (2205 not suitable for temperatures above 300°C.) |
