Overview
UNS S31600 is a standard austenitic stainless steel grade, characterized by the integration of molybdenum (2.00-3.00%) to enhance its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-rich environments such as seawater, brine, and chemical solutions. Composed of 16.00-18.00% chromium and 10.00-14.00% nickel, it forms a stable austenitic microstructure that ensures non-magnetic properties in the annealed state. This grade exhibits outstanding ductility, formability, and weldability, allowing for easy fabrication into various product forms including sheets, pipes, bars, and fittings. Unlike ultra-low carbon variants, its carbon content (≤ 0.08%) balances corrosion resistance and mechanical strength, making it a preferred choice for general corrosive environments where post-weld annealing is not always required.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C ≤ 0.08, Cr: 16.00-18.00, Ni: 10.00-14.00, Mo: 2.00-3.00, Mn ≤ 2.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030
Typical Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition)
Tensile Strength (Rm): ≥ 520 MPa; Yield Strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 205 MPa; Elongation (A): ≥ 40%; Brinell Hardness (HB): ≤ 187
Core Advantages
Molybdenum addition provides excellent pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride media; stable austenitic structure ensures non-magnetic properties and high ductility; good weldability with minimal post-processing; balanced carbon content for optimal strength and corrosion performance; versatile for diverse fabrication processes and product forms.
Applications
Marine hardware and components, chemical processing tanks, food and beverage processing equipment, pharmaceutical machinery, coastal architectural structures, and industrial piping systems exposed to mild to moderate corrosive environments.
Equivalent Grades
EN 1.4401, STS316, GB 06Cr17Ni12Mo2, AISI 316, SUS316
