Overview

UNS S31609 is a high-carbon austenitic stainless steel, engineered specifically for high-temperature applications that demand exceptional creep strength and oxidation resistance. With a carbon content of 0.04-0.10%, it delivers higher high-temperature mechanical stability compared to UNS S31600 and S31603, enabling continuous service at temperatures above 595°C. It retains the molybdenum (2.00-3.00%) addition for corrosion resistance and maintains a stable austenitic structure through 16.00-18.00% chromium and 10.00-14.00% nickel. This grade is non-magnetic, has good weldability with proper preheating, and is widely utilized in high-temperature industrial equipment where creep deformation is a key concern.

Chemical Composition (wt%)

C: 0.04-0.10, Cr: 16.00-18.00, Ni: 10.00-14.00, Mo: 2.00-3.00, Mn ≤ 2.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030, N ≤ 0.10

Typical Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition)

Tensile Strength (Rm): ≥ 520 MPa; Yield Strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 205 MPa; Elongation (A): ≥ 35%; Brinell Hardness (HB): ≤ 201

Core Advantages

High carbon content enhances high-temperature creep strength and dimensional stability; excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures (up to 700°C continuous service); molybdenum ensures corrosion resistance in chloride environments; non-magnetic; good weldability with preheating; suitable for high-temperature pressure vessels and heat-resistant components.

Applications

High-temperature boilers, industrial heat exchangers, steam turbines, petrochemical cracking equipment, nuclear power plant components, and high-temperature piping systems requiring creep resistance and corrosion protection.
