Overview
UNS S42000 is a medium-carbon martensitic stainless steel, featuring a higher carbon content than UNS S41000, which enables superior hardness and wear resistance after heat treatment. With 12.0-14.0% chromium, it offers better corrosion resistance than UNS S41000, particularly in atmospheric and mild chemical environments. Its martensitic structure allows for quenching and tempering to achieve a hardness of 50-55 HRC, making it ideal for applications requiring sharp edges and wear durability. It is magnetic, has good machinability when annealed, and serves as an economical alternative to higher-carbon martensitic grades for cutting tools and precision components.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C: 0.16-0.25, Cr: 12.00-14.00, Mn ≤ 1.50, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.015, Ni ≤ 0.75
Typical Mechanical Properties (Quenched & Tempered Condition)
Tensile Strength (Rm): ≥ 850 MPa; Yield Strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 550 MPa; Elongation (A): ≥ 10%; Hardness (HRC): 50-55
Core Advantages
Heat-treatable to high hardness and wear resistance; better corrosion resistance than UNS S41000; good machinability in the annealed state; magnetic; excellent edge retention for cutting tools; cost-effective for precision components; good surface polishability for decorative or functional parts.
Applications
Knives, scissors, surgical instruments, plastic molds, valve components, gears, pump parts, and耐磨机械零件 in mild corrosive environments (avoiding chloride-rich conditions).
Equivalent Grades
EN 1.4021, AISI 420, GB 20Cr13, SUS420J1
