Overview
UNS S41000 is a widely used martensitic stainless steel with a 11.5-13.5% chromium content, offering a balanced combination of moderate corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength. Its martensitic structure allows for heat treatment (quenching and tempering) to adjust hardness and strength, making it flexible for diverse applications. Unlike ferritic grades, it can be hardened to achieve enhanced wear resistance while maintaining good machinability in the annealed state. It is magnetic and exhibits reliable performance in atmospheric, freshwater, and mild chemical environments, serving as a versatile choice for industrial and consumer products.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C: 0.08-0.15, Cr: 11.50-13.50, Mn ≤ 1.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.040, S ≤ 0.030, Ni ≤ 0.75, N ≤ 0.11
Typical Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition)
Tensile Strength (Rm): ≥ 450 MPa; Yield Strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 205 MPa; Elongation (A): ≥ 20%; Brinell Hardness (HB): ≤ 225
Core Advantages
Heat-treatable for adjustable hardness and strength; moderate corrosion resistance in mild environments; good machinability and formability in the annealed state; magnetic with high thermal conductivity; cost-effective for general-purpose applications; stable performance at temperatures up to 700°C.
Applications
Valve components, pump shafts, fasteners, cutlery, surgical instruments, machine parts, ore processing equipment, and general hardware requiring moderate strength and corrosion resistance.
Equivalent Grades
