Description
UNS S42000 is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel designed for applications requiring high hardness, wear resistance, and moderate corrosion resistance. With higher carbon content than S41000, it can be heat-treated to reach high hardness levels. It offers better corrosion resistance than 410 and good polishability, making it suitable for cutting tools and precision components. It is magnetic and performs well in mild corrosive environments, though not recommended for high-chloride or marine conditions.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C: 0.15–0.30, Cr: 12.00–14.00, Mn ≤ 1.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030, Ni ≤ 0.75
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength ≥ 620 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 450 MPa, Elongation ≥ 12%, Hardness ≤ 223 HB
Advantages
High hardness and wear resistance; good polishability; heat-treatable; magnetic; better corrosion resistance than 410.
Applications
Knives, blades, cutlery, molds, valves, bearings, surgical tools, and wear-resistant components.
Equivalent Grades
AISI 420, EN 1.4021, GB 20Cr13
