Description
UNS S43000 is a widely used ferritic stainless steel, celebrated for its good corrosion resistance, excellent formability, and cost-effectiveness. With 16.0-18.0% chromium, it delivers superior protection against atmospheric and mild chemical corrosion compared to lower-chromium ferritic grades like S40900. Its ferritic microstructure ensures magnetic properties, and it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but it offers exceptional weldability, machinability, and surface finish. Unlike austenitic grades such as S30400, S43000 is more affordable and suitable for applications where extreme corrosion resistance is not required. It also has good high-temperature oxidation resistance, making it ideal for furnace parts and heat exchangers, as well as decorative and appliance applications.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C ≤ 0.12, Cr: 16.00-18.00, Mn ≤ 1.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030, Ni ≤ 0.75
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength ≥ 450 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 205 MPa, Elongation ≥ 22%, Hardness ≤ 183 HB
Advantages
Good corrosion resistance in mild environments; cost-effective vs. austenitic grades; excellent formability and weldability; magnetic; easy to machine and polish; reliable high-temperature oxidation resistance.
Applications
Architectural trim, decorative panels, kitchen appliances (sinks, ovens), food processing equipment, furnace parts, heat exchangers, automotive trim, and general-purpose components.
Equivalent Grades
