Description
UNS S44002 (440A) is the lowest-carbon grade in the 440 series, offering balanced hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. It can be heat-treated to high hardness and has better formability and weldability than 440B and 440C. It provides good corrosion resistance in mild environments and is widely used in tools and mechanical components.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C: 0.60–0.75, Cr: 16.00–18.00, Mn ≤ 1.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030, Mo ≤ 0.75
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength ≥ 760 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 550 MPa, Elongation ≥ 10%, Hardness 54–58 HRC (heat-treated)
Advantages
Good hardness and wear resistance; better formability than 440B/440C; heat-treatable; magnetic.
Applications
Knives, blades, valves, bearings, cutlery, and general tooling components.
Equivalent Grades
AISI 440A, EN 1.4116, GB 7Cr17
