1.4567 stainless steel, commonly known as Nitronic 50 or UNS S20910, is a high-strength, nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel that offers an exceptional combination of high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and outstanding wear and galling resistance. With its high nitrogen and manganese content, it achieves approximately twice the yield strength of conventional austenitic grades like 316L while maintaining excellent ductility and toughness. This makes it the material of choice for demanding applications in aerospace, marine, chemical processing, and high-stress fastener industries where both strength and corrosion resistance are critical.

Key Characteristics and Applications of 1.4567 / Nitronic 50

High Strength and Good Toughness: Provides approximately twice the yield strength of 316 stainless steel while maintaining excellent impact toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures down to -196°C.

Excellent Corrosion Resistance: Offers corrosion resistance superior to 316L in many environments, with better resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion (PREN typically 32-35).

Outstanding Wear and Galling Resistance: Performs exceptionally well in moving contact applications, such as bearings, bushings, and valve components, due to its high work hardening rate and galling resistance superior to most stainless steels.

Non-Magnetic: Remains essentially non-magnetic even after severe cold working, making it suitable for instrumentation, medical, and electronic applications.

Primary Applications:

Aerospace: Fasteners, landing gear components, actuators, and high-stress structural parts.

Marine: Shafts, pumps, valves, fittings, and propeller components in seawater environments.

Chemical Processing: High-stress components, pump shafts, valve stems, and mixing equipment.

Oil & Gas: Downhole tools, wellhead components, high-pressure fasteners, and instrumentation.

Medical: Surgical instruments, implants, and medical device components.

Pulp & Paper: Doctor blades, cutter bars, and wear components in aggressive environments.

Food Processing: Equipment requiring high strength and corrosion resistance.

How does Nitronic 50 (1.4567) compare to 17-4PH (1.4542) and 316L (1.4404)?

Nitronic 50 is an austenitic stainless steel strengthened by nitrogen, while 17-4PH is a martensitic precipitation-hardening grade. Nitronic 50 offers significantly better corrosion resistance than both 316L and 17-4PH, especially in chloride environments. It maintains its properties at cryogenic temperatures where 17-4PH may embrittle. Unlike 17-4PH, it remains non-magnetic and has better weldability without post-weld heat treatment. Compared to 316L, Nitronic 50 offers approximately twice the yield strength and superior wear/galling resistance. While 17-4PH can achieve higher hardness (up to 44 HRC vs. 28 HRC for Nitronic 50), Nitronic 50 offers better toughness and corrosion resistance. It is often chosen where a combination of high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and galling resistance is required.

What are the machining considerations for Nitronic 50?

Nitronic 50 has a high work hardening rate, which can make machining more challenging than standard austenitic grades. Recommended practices include:
Using rigid setups and sharp cutting tools with positive rake angles
Maintaining moderate speeds and consistent feeds to avoid work hardening
Using adequate cooling and chip control
For tapping and threading, specially designed tools may be required
It responds well to grinding and polishing, achieving excellent surface finishes
In the annealed condition, machinability is approximately 40-50% of B1112 steel
Carbide tooling is recommended for production machining

What temperature range is Nitronic 50 suitable for?

Nitronic 50 is suitable for an extremely wide temperature range from cryogenic conditions down to -196°C (-320°F) up to about 350°C (662°F) for continuous service. Its high nitrogen content provides excellent strength retention at elevated temperatures, while its stable austenitic structure ensures outstanding toughness at cryogenic temperatures, making it one of the few stainless steels suitable for both liquid helium and elevated temperature service. For short-term exposure, it can withstand higher temperatures, but long-term exposure above 350°C may affect properties.
