What Is 1.4662 Stainless Steel?
EN 1.4662 (chemical designation: X2CrNiMnMoCuN24-4-3-2) is a lean duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel developed by Outokumpu under the commercial name Forta LDX 2404. It offers higher strength and pitting resistance than standard 2205 duplex, while using significantly less nickel - making it a cost-effective alternative.

Is 1.4662 stainless steel magnetic?
Yes, it is magnetic. Because 1.4662 contains approximately 50% ferrite phase, it exhibits distinct ferromagnetism. This differs fundamentally from grades 304 and 316 (which are austenitic and non-magnetic or only weakly magnetic).
What are the welding characteristics of 1.4662?
It has good weldability. Most standard welding methods (MMA, TIG, MIG, SAW) can be used.
Precautions: Matching filler materials (such as LDX 2101 or 2205 welding consumables) must be used to ensure a balanced ratio of austenite to ferrite in the weld metal. Excessive heat input and excessively rapid cooling should be avoided.
What is the maximum temperature 1.4662 stainless steel can withstand?
Upper limit: It is recommended that the long-term service temperature does not exceed 250°C–300°C. Exceeding this range leads to "475°C embrittlement," causing the material to become brittle.
Lower limit: It exhibits good low-temperature toughness, typically down to -50°C.
What are the applications of 1.4662 stainless steel?
Storage tanks (water, chemical, food-grade)
Flood and sluice gates (marine/civil engineering)
Pulp, paper & biomass conversion equipment
Desalination components
Structural components requiring high strength + corrosion resistance
Heat exchangers and piping in process industries
1.4662 Stainless Steel price per kg
The approximate price of EN 1.4662 (LDX 2404 / UNS S82441) stainless steel ranges from $2.00 to $8.00 per kg, depending heavily on the product form, order volume, and shipping destination.

What is the difference between 1.4662 and 2205 (1.4462)?
1.4662 (LDX 2101) is a "lean duplex" grade with lower alloy content, primarily used as a substitute for 304/316.
1.4462 (2205) is a "standard duplex" grade containing approximately 3% molybdenum (Mo); it offers superior corrosion resistance (especially against pitting) but comes at a higher price.
In short: Choose 1.4662 for moderately corrosive environments where cost and strength are priorities; choose 2205 for very harsh environments (high chloride levels, high temperatures).
