what is EN 1.4362 stainless steel ?

EN 1.4362, also known as UNS S32304 or Lean Duplex 2304, is a duplex stainless steel with a combination of ferrite and austenite phases. It offers high mechanical properties, good resistance to general corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, and excellent weldability. Common applications include shafts, pump and valve parts, tanks, and desalination plants.

What material is 1.4362 equivalent to?
Duplex 1.4362 / X2CrNiN23-4 has a high resistance to acid environments and stress corrosion. It is a great, much better alternative to austenitic 316L / 1.4404 stainless steel and can also be used interchangeably with 1.4460 / X3CrNiMoN27-5-2.

Corrosion resistance
The stainless steel 1.4362 has a very good corrosion resistance (PREN value 23.1 - 29.2), which is given both against chloride-containing media and against organic acids and phosphoric acids. Due to its austenitic-ferritic structure, the material is also resistant to intergranular corrosion, stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue.

Weldability
Duplex steel 1.4362 has very good welding properties that enable the use of all common welding processes. Heat treatment after welding is not required. However, it should be noted that hot cracks can occur in this austenitic-ferritic material. If a welding filler is required, 1.4462 (AISI 318LN) should be selected.

Heat treatment and hot forming
Solution heat treatment (cooling by air or water): 950-1050 °C
Hot forming (cooling by air): 1150-950 °C

What is the difference between 1.4462 and 1.4362?

The difference between 1.4462 (duplex stainless steel, UNS S31803/S32205) and 1.4362 (austenitic stainless steel, UNS S31603) lies in their microstructure, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties: 1.4462 is a duplex steel with 50% ferrite and 50% austenite, while 1.4362 is a fully austenitic steel with excellent general corrosion resistance, elongation ≥40% and better ductility for forming applications.
