When selecting stainless steel for harsh environments such as marine, chemical, or offshore applications, 1.4410 (UNS S32750) and 1.4547 (UNS N08925) are two premium choices known for their exceptional corrosion resistance and mechanical performance. But which one should you choose?

This article breaks down the difference between 1.4410 and 1.4547 stainless steel to help you make an informed decision.

What is the difference between 1.4410 and 1.4547 stainless steel?

1.4410 Stainless Steel

1.4410 Stainless Steel (Super Duplex)

Standard: EN 1.4410 / UNS S32750 / ASTM A240 / A182

Type: Super Duplex Stainless Steel

Structure: Dual-phase (austenite + ferrite)

Key Features:

Very high strength (up to 800 MPa tensile strength)

Excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking

PREN ≥ 40 (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number)

Ideal for aggressive chloride-containing environments

Common Applications:
Offshore platforms, subsea equipment, heat exchangers, desalination plants, pressure vessels.

1.4547 Stainless Steel (Super Austenitic)

Standard: EN 1.4547 / UNS N08925 / ASTM A240 / A312

Type: Super Austenitic Stainless Steel

Structure: Fully austenitic

Key Features:

Excellent corrosion resistance in highly acidic and chloride-rich environments

Very good formability and weldability

PREN ≥ 45 – even higher than 1.4410

Superior resistance to sulfuric and phosphoric acid

Common Applications:
Chemical processing, pulp and paper industry, flue gas scrubbers, heat exchangers, marine exhaust systems.

Corrosion Resistance

1.4410 (Super Duplex S32750) has high resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, especially in marine, offshore, and brine environments. Its PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) is typically ≥40, making it suitable for aggressive chloride exposure.

1.4547 (Super Austenitic N08926) offers even higher resistance to localized corrosion, especially in acidic and high-chloride media, such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and polluted seawater. Its PREN is around 45–50, among the highest in stainless steels, and it performs excellently in harsh chemical processing environments.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose 1.4410:if your project demands extremely high strength, and you are dealing with chloride stress corrosion, especially in offshore and marine environments.

Choose 1.4547:if your application involves strong acids or extreme corrosion conditions (like sulfuric acid processing), and you need top-tier corrosion resistance with excellent weldability.
