Both SMO 254 and SS316 are high-performance stainless steels widely used in industries requiring exceptional corrosion resistance and strength. In terms of chemical composition, SMO 254 contains a higher proportion of molybdenum and nickel, giving it superior resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. While SS316 remains one of the most commonly used austenitic stainless steels, its resistance to extreme environments is not as robust as that of SMO 254.

What is 254 smo material?

254 SMO stainless steel is equivalent to EN 1.4547, ASTM A312 UNS S31254 (tubing), with forging grade ASTM A182 F44 and casting grade ASTM A351 CK3MCuN, also known as 6Mo alloy. It is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel specifically developed for seawater and other corrosive chloride-containing media. It exhibits excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, with a PRE value of ≥42.5*.

What is SS316 stainless steel?
316 stainless steel is an austenitic alloy, the second most common after 304, distinguished by adding 2-3% molybdenum, which significantly boosts its resistance to chlorides, saltwater, and harsh industrial chemicals, making it ideal for marine, medical, food processing, and chemical equipment where superior corrosion protection is needed, often called "marine-grade"

What are the differences between SMO 254 and SS316?

Compared to 316 stainless steel, SMO 254 offers superior corrosion resistance, strength, and heat resistance, but it is more difficult to process and requires specific filler materials for welding.

SMO 254 vs. SS316 Stainless Steel: Corrosion Resistance

SMO 254 (UNS S31254, 6% molybdenum super austenitic stainless steel) contains approximately 24% chromium, 6% molybdenum, and 0.20% nitrogen, with a PREN value of approximately 42-45. Therefore, its resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress corrosion cracking is far superior to SS316 (UNS S31600, approximately 17% chromium, 2-3% molybdenum, PREN value of approximately 23-26), especially in acidic, chloride-rich, and high-temperature environments, such as seawater and sulfuric acid media.

SMO 254 vs. SS316 Stainless Steel: Machinability

Due to its higher alloy content and work hardening tendency, SMO 254 has significantly lower machinability than SS316, requiring a reduction in cutting speed of approximately 30-40%, the use of stronger tools, and frequent tool changes; while SS316 can be machined using standard austenitic stainless steel machining methods, achieving higher productivity in turning, drilling, and milling operations.

What is the difference between SMO 254 and 6MO?

SMO 254 has a high yield strength of 300 MPa and a tensile strength of 650 MPa. 6MO, on the other hand, has a yield strength of 300 MPa and a tensile strength of 650 MPa. Both alloys exhibit excellent toughness and can withstand extreme temperatures
