What is 316 stainless steel?
316 stainless steel is a standard molybdenum-containing stainless steel grade, second only to 304 stainless steel in importance among austenitic stainless steels. It has excellent forming and welding properties. It can be easily formed into a variety of parts by bending or roll forming, making it suitable for use in industrial, construction, and transportation applications. 316 stainless steel also has excellent welding properties, eliminating the need for post-weld annealing when welding thin-walled components.


What is 410 stainless steel?
410 martensitic stainless steel is a general-purpose grade, typically supplied in a hardened but still machinable state, suitable for applications requiring high strength and moderate heat and corrosion resistance. Like most non-stainless steels, it can be hardened through a "quench-and-temper" heat treatment. It contains at least 11.5% chromium, sufficient to impart corrosion resistance. Optimum corrosion resistance is achieved after quenching, tempering, and polishing.

SS 410 vs. 316L Stainless Steel: Corrosion Resistance

SS 316L offers far superior corrosion resistance compared to SS 410, particularly in harsh environments like marine settings or those containing chlorides, due to its higher nickel and molybdenum content. SS 410, with higher carbon and simpler composition, is a harder, stronger steel with only moderate corrosion resistance, making it suitable for wear-resistant applications in milder conditions but prone to rust in more demanding or moist environment


SS 410 and 316L Stainless Steel: Hardness

SS 410 is a martensitic stainless steel that can reach hardnesses up to 35 HRC after heat treatment. In contrast, SS 316L is an austenitic stainless steel that offers good corrosion resistance but has a significantly lower inherent hardness, typically around 95 HRB in its softened state, and cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

SS 316L is easier to weld than SS 410 because its lower carbon content minimizes the risk of weld corrosion and post-weld heat treatment.
