What is UNS S31803 stainless steel?
UNS S31803 is a duplex stainless steel with a balanced microstructure containing approximately 50% ferrite and 50% austenite. It exhibits excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), a high yield strength of ≥450 MPa, and better chloride corrosion resistance than 316/316L stainless steel. However, this duplex structure also makes the alloy more sensitive to extreme temperatures than fully austenitic stainless steels.

UNS 31803 Stainless Steel Low-Temperature Performance
Generally, provided the material undergoes proper solution annealing and water quenching, impact testing can confirm its acceptable toughness at temperatures as low as -50°C. UNS S31803 maintains good impact toughness at sub-zero temperatures, making it suitable for: cryogenic pipelines, offshore structures, and industrial facilities in cold climates.
Why is UNS S31803 not recommended for use at temperatures above 300°C?
At high temperatures, duplex stainless steel may experience the following: sigma phase formation, α' phase embrittlement, and reduced toughness and ductility. These microstructural changes can occur even without significant corrosion, leading to: increased risk of brittle fracture, decreased fatigue resistance, and irreversible performance degradation.
Therefore, unlike austenitic stainless steel grades such as 316L, UNS S31803 is not suitable for long-term high-temperature applications.
