What is the wnr 1.4301 ?
WNR 1.4301 is a European standard designation for a versatile, widely used grade of austenitic stainless steel, also known as AISI 304 or X5CrNi18-10. It is an chromium-nickel stainless steel that offers excellent corrosion resistance due to its chromium content. The "18/8" name is a reference to its approximate composition of 18% chromium and 8% nickel.

is EN 1.4301 stainless steel magnetic?

No, EN 1.4301 stainless steel is not magnetic in its annealed (soft) state. However, it can become slightly magnetic after undergoing cold working, such as bending or forming, because this process can alter its crystal structure.

Forgeability
Material 1.4301 has good forging properties. After slow heating to approx. 1150°C - 1180°C, the material can be forged in the range of approx. 1180 - 950 °C. Cooling after forging should take place in water or air.

Heat treatment and hot forming
Solution heat treatment (cooling by air or water): 1000-1100 °C
Hot forming (cooling by air): 1200-900 °C

Machinability
EN 1.4301 stainless steel has reasonable machinability, but it can be challenging compared to free-machining grades because it is prone to work hardening and creates stringy chips. This means that it can be machined for parts requiring extensive operations, but it may lead to slower speeds and increased tool wear. For better results in demanding machining applications, special "free-machining" grades like 1.4305 (AISI 303) should be considered.

What is the difference between 1.4301 and 1.4305?
The main difference is that 1.4301 (AISI 304) has superior corrosion and weldability, while 1.4305 (AISI 303) has significantly better machinability due to added sulfur. 1.4301 is a general-purpose stainless steel, whereas 1.4305 is preferred for applications requiring high-precision machining.
