Recently, GNEE Stainless Steel successfully completed the production and shipment of ASTM A790 UNS S32205 Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Seamless Pipes for a customer in South Korea. The project involved 168.3 mm outside diameter × 14.27 mm wall thickness × 6000 mm length pipes used in a corrosive industrial pipeline system.
Unlike conventional stainless steel pipe orders, the customer focused not only on price but also on material authenticity, dimensional consistency, corrosion resistance, delivery reliability, and complete inspection documentation. Any deviation could delay installation or increase maintenance costs after commissioning.
This successful shipment once again demonstrates GNEE's capability to provide high-performance duplex stainless steel piping solutions for the petrochemical, offshore, marine, power generation, and desalination industries.

Why the Customer Selected Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel pipe?
The Korean customer required piping for a corrosive industrial environment where conventional 304L stainless steel could not provide sufficient resistance to chloride-induced corrosion.
Duplex 2205 was selected because it offers:
More than twice the yield strength of 304L and 316L stainless steel.
Excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking.
Superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance.
High mechanical strength, allowing thinner wall designs and reduced project weight.
Long service life in marine and chemical processing environments.
These advantages help reduce maintenance costs while improving system reliability.
Customer Challenges & GNEE Solutions
Industrial duplex stainless steel piping requires significantly tighter manufacturing control than conventional austenitic stainless steel. During this project, the customer emphasized dimensional consistency, weld-free pipe integrity, and complete traceability.

Chemical Composition Assurance
This South Korean client had previously encountered issues with inconsistent material properties from other suppliers. Certain batches exhibited an imbalance in the ferrite-to-austenite ratio, resulting in unstable mechanical properties and reduced corrosion resistance after welding.
GNEE Solution: Every production batch underwent the following processes: 100% PMI (Positive Material Identification), solution annealing under controlled temperatures, ferrite content testing, EN10204 3.1 material certification, and 100% material traceability. These measures eliminated the risk of material mix-ups and ensured consistent corrosion resistance throughout the project.
Dimensional Tolerance Control
Maintaining dimensional accuracy for 2205 duplex stainless steel pipes during rolling and heat treatment is often challenging. Even minor deviations in outer diameter or wall thickness can lead to fit-up difficulties during on-site welding; consequently, the client's engineering contractors demanded extremely high dimensional precision to minimize adjustment work during installation.
GNEE Solution:
Laser-based dimensional measurements were performed on every batch, with 100% inspection of outer diameter and wall thickness, as well as straightness checks prior to packaging.
Inspection Results: Outer diameter tolerance was controlled within ±0.30 mm, wall thickness tolerance was maintained within ±0.25 mm, and 100% of the pipes met straightness specifications.

Surface Quality
Duplex stainless steel possesses exceptional resistance to chloride corrosion; however, improper surface treatment can leave behind residual oxide scale, iron contamination, or grinding marks, which may serve as initiation points for corrosion.
GNEE Solution:
Following solution annealing, each steel pipe undergoes the following processes: pickling, passivation, high-pressure water cleaning, and 100% visual inspection.
Final inspection confirms: no oxide scale, no scratches, no delamination, and no surface cracks.
Complete Inspection Documents Required Before Shipment
The South Korean client requires a full set of documents before the final payment is made; missing certificates could lead to delays in customs clearance and project installation.
GNEE Solution:
Each shipment is accompanied by the following documents: EN10204 3.1 Material Certificate, Chemical Composition Report, Mechanical Properties Test Report, Hydrostatic Test Report, Ultrasonic Testing Report, PMI (Positive Material Identification) Report, Packing List, and Commercial Invoice.

Comprehensive Quality Inspection
Before shipment, every Duplex 2205 pipe passed strict inspection procedures.
| Inspection Item | Inspection Rate |
|---|---|
| PMI Test | 100% |
| Hydrostatic Test | 100% |
| Ultrasonic Test | 100% |
| Dimensional Inspection | 100% |
| Visual Inspection | 100% |
| Surface Inspection | 100% |
| Material Traceability | 100% |
These inspections ensured every pipe met ASTM A790 requirements before export.
