What Is ASTM A269 TP316L Stainless Steel EP Tubes?
ASTM A269 TP316L EP Tube is a seamless or welded stainless steel tube made from low carbon 316L austenitic steel with an electropolished (EP) internal surface. The EP process removes micro-chips, smoothes welds and surface irregularities, and significantly reduces surface roughness, and is manufactured to meet the stringent requirements of pharmaceutical, biotechnology, semiconductor, food, and high purity water applications.
Advantages
TP316L stainless steel tubes, processed through electropolishing (EP), achieve an internal surface roughness of Ra ≤ 0.15 μm (with some industry standards requiring Ra ≤ 0.25 μm), which is over 80% smoother than traditional BA tubes (Ra ≤ 0.8 μm). This significantly reduces micro-turbulence and particle adhesion during fluid flow. In the solution-annealed condition, the tubes offer a tensile strength ≥ 485 MPa and elongation ≥ 40%, making them suitable for bending, flaring, and other complex piping fabrication needs.
During the electropolishing process, a passivation layer of Cr₂O₃ with a thickness ≥ 1.5 nm forms on the surface, providing far greater stability than mechanical polishing or acid passivation treatments. Salt spray tests show corrosion resistance exceeding 1000 hours, far outperforming standard stainless steel.
