What is the difference between ASTM A240 316 and 316L?
The primary difference lies in their carbon content: the carbon content of 316 is ≤ 0.08%, while that of 316L is ≤ 0.03%.
316L is better suited for welding, as it prevents "intergranular corrosion" from occurring in the weld zone; however, in terms of resistance to pitting corrosion (based on Mo content), the two are essentially identical.
What is the maximum temperature that 316 stainless steel can withstand?
316 stainless steel can withstand temperatures of approximately 870°C under intermittent use and 925°C under continuous use. However, if the environment involves corrosive media and the temperature falls within the range of 425°C to 860°C, it is recommended to use 316L to prevent carbide precipitation.
