440 stainless steel, including its subgrades such as 440A, 440B, and 440C, is a martensitic stainless steel characterized by high carbon content (0.75–1.2%) and high chromium content (16–18%). After heat treatment, it can achieve exceptionally high hardness (HRC 56–62) and outstanding wear resistance. Formed through cold bending or hot rolling processes, 440 stainless steel C-channels and U-channels are ideal for use in heavy machinery frames and industrial equipment support structures.
Advantages
After quenching and tempering, 440 martensitic stainless steel channel can reach a hardness of HRC 56–62 (with 440C offering the highest), which is more than three times harder than standard 304 stainless steel (HRC ≤ 20), and even exceeds the hardness of some tool steels. This makes it ideal for high-impact applications such as mining machinery and stamping dies.
The 440 high-strength stainless steel channel offers a tensile strength ≥ 700 MPa (in annealed condition) and yield strength ≥ 450 MPa. Its flexural rigidity is 25% higher than that of equivalent carbon steel channels, and its torsional resistance is improved by 30%, making it an excellent choice for heavy-duty machinery frames and aerospace structural supports.
With 16–18% chromium content, the 440 stainless steel U profile forms a dense, protective oxide layer that gives it a corrosion resistance lifespan three times longer than carbon steel. While its corrosion resistance is comparable to that of 430 stainless steel, its cost is only 60–70% of 304 stainless steel, making it a highly cost-effective alternative.
