When selecting stainless steel piping for industries like oil & gas, marine, desalination, or chemical processing, buyers often consider two popular grades: 1.4462 duplex stainless steel (UNS S31803/S32205) and 316L austenitic stainless steel.
Both materials offer excellent corrosion resistance, but they differ significantly in mechanical strength, cost-efficiency, and application suitability. This guide compares 1.4462 duplex vs 316L stainless steel pipes to help you make an informed procurement decision.
What Is 1.4462 Duplex Stainless Steel?
1.4462 (also known as X2CrNiMoN22-5-3) is a duplex stainless steel consisting of approximately 50% austenite and 50% ferrite, equivalent to EN standard UNS S31803/S32205. It is characterized by higher strength than 316L and excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, especially in chloride-rich and high-pressure environments.
What is 316L Stainless Steel?
316L, or EN 1.4404, is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel with 2-3% molybdenum, offering better corrosion resistance than 304L; it is widely used thanks to its good weldability and formability, reliable corrosion resistance in various industrial environments, and excellent performance at both high and low temperatures.

Duplex 2205 vs 316L corrosion resistance
1.4462 contains more chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, resulting in a higher PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) and better overall resistance to localized corrosion-particularly in seawater, brine, and acidic chemicals.
316L performs well in most freshwater, mild acid, and indoor applications but can suffer from pitting corrosion in saltwater or aggressive media without proper surface treatment.
316L vs 1.4462 strength
1.4462 has a yield strength approximately 2 times higher, making it ideal for load-bearing, high-pressure systems or applications where reduced wall thickness is required to reduce weight.
316L is easier to form and is the preferred choice for deep drawing, bending or applications requiring high elongation.
316L vs 1.4462:Cost
In terms of initial cost, 316L austenitic stainless steel is generally cheaper than EN 1.4462 duplex stainless steel, however, from a total life cycle cost (LCC) perspective, 1.4462 is more cost-effective in the long term. Its excellent corrosion resistance reduces maintenance, downtime and replacement frequency.
