What is 1.4512 Stainless Steel?
1.4512 stainless steel, also known as X6CrTi12 or AISI 409, is a ferritic stainless steel primarily used in applications requiring moderate corrosion resistance and good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. It contains approximately 11% chromium and is stabilized with titanium to improve weldability and prevent intergranular corrosion. Commonly found in automotive exhaust systems, home appliances, and architectural trim.
What is the Equivalent of 1.4509 Stainless Steel?
1.4509 stainless steel is the EN designation for a ferritic stainless steel equivalent to AISI 441 or UNS S44100. It contains approximately 18% chromium, stabilized with niobium and titanium, which enhances its resistance to weld decay, pitting, and high-temperature scaling. Known for its superior corrosion resistance and formability compared to 1.4512 (409), 1.4509 is widely used in automotive exhaust components, heat exchangers, and domestic appliances, especially where improved weldability and durability are required.
1.4512 Stainless Steel vs. 1.4509:Chemical Composition
| Element | 1.4512 (Type 409) | 1.4509 (Type 441) |
|---|---|---|
| Chromium (Cr) | 10.5 – 11.7% | 17.5 – 18.5% |
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.03% | ≤ 0.03% |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 1.0% | ≤ 1.0% |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.0% | ≤ 1.0% |
| Nickel (Ni) | ≤ 0.5% (residual) | ≤ 0.5% (residual) |
| Titanium (Ti) | Stabilized | Stabilized |
| Niobium (Nb) | – | 0.3 – 0.6% |
1.4512 Stainless Steel vs. 1.4509:Mechanical Properties Comparison
| Property | 1.4512 | 1.4509 |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | 380 – 550 MPa | 450 – 650 MPa |
| Yield Strength (Rp0.2) | ≥ 170 MPa | ≥ 210 MPa |
| Elongation (% L0=5d) | ≥ 20% | ≥ 25% |
| Magnetic | Yes (ferritic) | Yes (ferritic) |
Can 1.4512 be used for welding?
Yes, but limited formability and weldability due to low chromium content; 1.4509 performs better for welded assemblies.
Is 1.4509 better than 1.4512?
Yes, in terms of corrosion resistance, thermal stability, and mechanical performance, 1.4509 is considered an upgraded version of 1.4512.
