What is 1.4539 material?
EN 1.4539, also known as 904L stainless steel, UNS number N08904, is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel containing a large amount of nickel and molybdenum. Due to its excellent resistance to acids, chlorides and seawater, this material is widely used in highly corrosive environments and corrosive chemical processing industries. It can be processed into a variety of practical product forms, including plates, coils, pipes, bars, and wires.
What material is 1.4539 equivalent to?
Material 1.4539 (EN standard) is primarily equivalent to 904L stainless steel (AISI 904L) and UNS N08904. This is a high-alloy, super-austenitic stainless steel with very low carbon, featuring high nickel (23–28%), chromium (19–23%), and molybdenum (4–5%), plus copper (1–2%), often referred to in DIN standards as X1NiCrMoCu25-20-5.

EN 1.4539 stainless steel Corrosion resistance
EN 1.4539 (904L) is a high-alloy, superaustenitic stainless steel designed for extreme corrosion resistance, particularly against sulfuric, phosphoric, and organic acids. It offers superior resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking compared to 316L, due to high nickel (23–28%), molybdenum (4-5%), and copper additions.
Weldability and formability of 1.4539 stainless steel
1.4539 Can be welded using all common welding processes (TIG, MIG, MMA). Due to its all-austenitic structure, it is susceptible to hot cracking. Low heat input and matched welding wire (E 20 25 5 L Cu or N08904) should be used. Post-weld heat treatment is usually not required.
1.4539 stainless steel Forging/Hot Forming:
Heat to 1150°C to 1200°C. Final temperature above 950°C. Rapid cooling (water or air) is necessary to avoid σ phase precipitation.
1.4539 stainless steel Solution Annealing:
Heat to 1050°C to 1150°C, then rapidly water or air cool. This ensures optimal corrosion resistance.
Is 1.4539 stainless steel magnetic?
1.4539 (also known as 904L or UNS N08904) is a super austenitic stainless steel that is generally non-magnetic in its annealed condition. Due to its high nickel and chromium content, this material provides excellent corrosion resistance and is usually chosen for non-magnetic applications.
What is the difference between 1.4539 and 1.4529?
1.4529 (Alloy 926/6Mo) is a "super austenitic" reinforced version of 1.4539 (904L), with a higher molybdenum content (approximately 6.5% compared to approximately 4.5%) and nitrogen content. This gives 1.4529 stronger resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride corrosion (e.g., in seawater, swimming pools), while 1.4539 is well-suited for storing sulfuric acid/phosphoric acid.
1.4539 Stainless Steel Applications
Chemical processing and manufacturing: Tanks, heat exchangers, pipelines, and reactors suitable for handling strong acids (e.g., sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and acetic acid).
Marine and offshore environments: Seawater cooling equipment, desalination plants, and offshore platform components.
Pollution control (environmental technology): Widely used in gas scrubbing units (flue gas desulfurization), especially absorbers and scrubbers.
