Overview: 316 stainless steel is an austenitic alloy enhanced with molybdenum, which significantly improves its corrosion resistance, especially in chloride-rich and acidic environments. It is a premium alternative to 304 for harsh industrial and marine applications.
Chemical Composition (wt%): Chromium (Cr): 16.0-18.0; Nickel (Ni): 10.0-14.0; Molybdenum (Mo): 2.0-3.0; Carbon (C): ≤0.08; Manganese (Mn): ≤2.00; Silicon (Si): ≤1.00; Phosphorus (P): ≤0.045; Sulfur (S): ≤0.030; Iron (Fe): Balance.
Typical Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition): Tensile Strength: ≥515 MPa; Yield Strength: ≥205 MPa; Elongation: ≥40%; Hardness (Brinell): ≤217 HB.
Core Advantages: Superior resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion; excellent corrosion resistance in saline, acidic, and marine environments; good tensile strength and cryogenic toughness; easy weldability and formability; suitable for harsh industrial conditions.
Applications: Chemical processing equipment, oil and gas pipelines, marine equipment (ships, offshore platforms), food and beverage processing machinery, medical devices, coastal architectural structures, and chemical storage tanks.
Equivalent Grades: UNS S31600; EN 1.4401; JIS SUS316; GB/T 06Cr17Ni12Mo2.
