Overview: 316L is the ultra-low carbon variant of 316 stainless steel, with a maximum carbon content of 0.03%. It combines the molybdenum-enhanced corrosion resistance of 316 with superior intergranular corrosion resistance, making it ideal for severe corrosive and welded applications.
Chemical Composition (wt%): Chromium (Cr): 16.0-18.0; Nickel (Ni): 10.0-14.0; Molybdenum (Mo): 2.0-3.0; Carbon (C): ≤0.03; Manganese (Mn): ≤2.00; Silicon (Si): ≤1.00; Phosphorus (P): ≤0.045; Sulfur (S): ≤0.030; Iron (Fe): Balance.
Typical Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition): Tensile Strength: ≥485 MPa; Yield Strength: ≥170 MPa; Elongation: ≥40%; Hardness (Brinell): ≤217 HB.
Core Advantages: Excellent intergranular corrosion resistance (no post-weld annealing needed); superior durability in chlorides, acids, and marine environments; non-magnetic; good formability and weldability; ideal for heavy welded sections and harsh corrosive conditions.
Applications: Offshore structures, pharmaceutical and biotech equipment, pulp and paper processing machinery, seawater desalination systems, high-purity chemical pipelines, marine coastal equipment, and medical implants.
Equivalent Grades: UNS S31603; EN 1.4404; JIS SUS316L; GB/T 022Cr17Ni12Mo2.
