what is alloy 2205 duplex stainless steel plate?

Alloy 2205 (also known as 2205 duplex stainless steel plate) is a ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless steel with an approximately 50/50 microstructure. It offers high strength and excellent corrosion resistance, with a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of 35–40, significantly outperforming 316L. It exhibits outstanding resistance to chloride-induced pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC), making it ideal for use in seawater, chemical processing, and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) environments.

ASTM A240 S32205 Stainless Steel Supplier

GNEE is a professional duplex stainless steel manufacturer with over 20 years of experience, dedicated to exporting Alloy 2205 (UNS S32205 / 1.4462) stainless steel plates to more than 50 countries worldwide. We have successfully delivered over 120 projects across industries such as mining, oil & gas, and chemical processing. All our plates fully comply with ASTM A240 / EN 10088 standards and are certified by ISO 9001, PED, and SGS. Each batch is supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate (MTC), ensuring full traceability throughout the supply chain.

Our 2205 plates are available in thicknesses ranging from 1.5 mm to 100 mm and widths from 1000 mm to 2000 mm. Post-weld heat treatment is not required. The plates support both cold and hot forming processes and can restore optimal performance through solution annealing (1020–1100°C, water quenching).

With a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) ≥35, 2205 stainless steel plates provide significantly better resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking than 304L and 316L. In addition, the yield strength of ≥450 MPa is more than twice that of standard austenitic stainless steels (such as 304, ~205 MPa). This allows for a reduction in plate thickness by 20% to 30% while maintaining performance, enabling lightweight design and material cost savings.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel plates are available in various surface finishes, including hot rolled, cold rolled, pickled, 2B finish, and polished surfaces. We also offer customized cutting, bending services, and small-batch sample supply to meet diverse project requirements.

Chemical Composition (ASTM A240 / % max)

Alloy 2205 is "Duplex" because it has a dual-phase microstructure consisting of approximately 50% ferrite and 50% austenite.

Element C Mn Si P S Cr Ni Mo N
S31803 0.030 2.00 1.00 0.030 0.020 21.0-23.0 4.5-6.5 2.5-3.5 0.08-0.20

S31803 vs. S32205 Stainless Steel Plate

S32205 stainless steel plate meets and exceeds all parameters of S31803, serving as a direct upgrade and substitute for it. The Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of S32205 is ≥34 higher than the approximately 30–32 range of S31803 thereby offering superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments (such as seawater and chemical processing). While S31803 remains suitable for general industrial applications, S32205 has emerged as the preferred choice in modern industry due to its superior performance, particularly in the fields of offshore engineering, desalination, and oil and gas.

What precautions should be taken when welding 2205 stainless steel plates?

1. Matching welding consumables (typically ER2209) must be used; these materials feature a higher nickel content than the base metal (approximately 9%) to ensure that the weld seam establishes the correct duplex balance upon cooling.
2. Heat Input Control: The heat input must not be too high (to prevent excessively rapid cooling, which leads to an excessive ferrite content), nor must it be too low (to prevent the formation of the detrimental Sigma phase).

Applications of Alloy 2205 Sheets

Oil & Gas Industry: Offshore platform equipment, heat exchangers, sour well piping, processing vessels, and riser components.
Chemical Processing & Storage: Storage tanks, pressure vessels, and piping for handling acids (such as phosphoric and organic acids).
Marine & Desalination: Seawater handling systems, desalination plant components (evaporators), and ship cargo tanks.
Pollution Control: Components within flue gas desulphurization (FGD) systems and effluent scrubbers.

Where can I buy 2205 stainless steel plates?

By choosing GNEE's 2205 plates, you acquire not merely a material, but a guarantee of safety. We provide original manufacturer warranties from TISCO and Baosteel, and every batch undergoes rigorous ASTM A923 corrosion testing to ensure the complete absence of Sigma phase.
We offer UNS S32205 (dual-certified) and also supply S31803. For standard dimensions (such as 1500x6000mm), stock preparation and packaging are typically completed within 3 to 7 business days. For customized orders or large-scale production runs, the lead time is typically 15 to 30 days.

Packaging

GNEE employs "Enhanced Seaworthy" packaging to prevent transit damage:
Surface Protection: Includes a standard application of PE film or specialized laser-protective film (to prevent scratches), along with interleaving paper placed between layers (specifically for cold-rolled products).
Pallet Standards: Utilizes fumigated wooden pallets or reinforced steel frame supports to ensure that thick plates do not undergo permanent deformation during hoisting operations.
Reinforcement Measures: Secured with high-strength steel strapping and wrapped externally in waterproof kraft paper and anti-rust film to guard against salt spray corrosion during sea transport.
