What is ASTM A790?

The ASTM A790 standard specifies seamless and welded ferritic/austenitic stainless steel pipes. Duplex stainless steel (DSS) pipes have a two-phase (α and γ) structure, combining the properties of both ferritic and austenitic stainless steels. Compared to austenitic stainless steel, duplex stainless steel offers improved yield strength, resistance to intergranular corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, corrosion fatigue, and erosion corrosion.

Commonly known as 2205 duplex steel, it is primarily composed of iron, chromium (22%), nickel (3%), and molybdenum (3%), and possesses excellent crack resistance, oxidation resistance, and good mechanical properties.

However, its seamless structure results in slightly lower strength compared to welded UNS S31803 pipes. For non-critical applications with slightly lower performance requirements, electric fusion welded (EFW) duplex S31803 UNS pipes can also be used. Applications for A790 S31803 resistance welded pipes include seawater and marine environments, chemical processing industries, food processing plants, heat generators, automotive parts, boiler components, and other high-temperature applications.

What is the difference between S32205 and S31803?

What is the Difference Between Duplex Steel UNS S31803 & UNS S32205 Fasteners. The main difference is the chromium and molybdenum content in their chemical composition. UNS S31803 has 22%-23% chromium and 4.5%-6.5% molybdenum, while the content for UNS S32205 is 21%-23% chromium and 3.0%-4.0% molybdenum.
