What Is Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel?
Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe (UNS S32205 / S31803) is one of the most widely used corrosion-resistant alloys in the piping industry. With approximately twice the yield strength of 316L and superior chloride corrosion resistance, 2205 pipe is specified across oil & gas, chemical processing, desalination, and marine engineering.
What is the schedule of 2205 stainless steel pipe?
2205 stainless steel pipe is available in schedules 5S, 10S, 40S, 80S, 160, and XXS per ANSI/ASME B36.19. The "S" suffix denotes stainless steel pipe schedules. Schedule 40S and 80S are the most commonly stocked and used for general process piping applications. Schedule 160 is used for high-pressure service.
What is the standard wall thickness for 2-inch 2205 pipe?
For a 2-inch (NPS 2) 2205 duplex stainless steel pipe, the wall thickness depends on the schedule: SCH 10S = 0.109" (2.77 mm), SCH 40S = 0.154" (3.91 mm), SCH 80S = 0.218" (5.54 mm), SCH 160 = 0.344" (8.74 mm). The outside diameter of NPS 2 pipe is 2.375 inches (60.3 mm) per ASME B36.19.

2205 pipe Weight Calculation Formula
Pipe Weight Formula (Unit: Feet)
W = (OD − t) × t × 10.68 × Density Factor
Where:
W = Weight per foot (lbs/ft)
OD = Outside diameter (inches)
t = Wall thickness (inches)
Density Factor = 0.282 lb/in³ (for 2205 duplex stainless steel)
10.68 = Conversion constant (π × 12 in/ft)
Quick weight estimation: For 2205 pipe, the formula can be simplified to: W (lbs/ft) = (OD − t) × t × 3.01. The value obtained from this formula is an approximation suitable for preliminary design.

Can I use Schedule 40S 2205 pipe instead of Schedule 80S 316L pipe?
In many cases, yes. Because 2205 has approximately 2.6 times the yield strength of 316L, a Schedule 40S 2205 pipe can provide equivalent or higher pressure capacity than a Schedule 80S 316L pipe, while reducing weight by 30-40%. However, this substitution must be verified by a qualified engineer using the applicable design code (ASME B31.3, etc.), considering all service conditions including temperature, corrosion allowance, and flange compatibility.
What is the maximum service temperature for 2205 duplex stainless steel piping?
The maximum continuous service temperature for 2205 duplex stainless steel piping is typically 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to temperatures above this limit may lead to the precipitation of intermetallic phases (such as sigma, chi, and alpha-prime phases), thereby reducing the material's toughness and corrosion resistance. For sour service applications compliant with NACE MR0175 standards, the upper temperature limit is 450°F (232°C). Always verify temperature limits against design specifications and information provided by the material supplier.
