Description
Grade 2205 is a duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel, renowned for its excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and good toughness. It consists of approximately 50% austenite and 50% ferrite, combining the best properties of both phases: the corrosion resistance and ductility of austenitic grades (like 316) and the high strength and stress corrosion cracking resistance of ferritic grades. 2205 contains 21.0-23.0% chromium, 4.5-6.5% nickel, and 3.0-3.5% molybdenum, along with nitrogen (0.14-0.20%) to enhance strength and corrosion resistance. It is magnetic (due to the ferritic phase) and offers superior resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, especially in chloride-containing environments such as marine, chemical, and offshore applications. 2205 has good weldability and formability, and its high strength allows for thinner section designs, reducing weight and cost. It is widely used in demanding corrosive environments where both strength and corrosion resistance are critical.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C ≤ 0.03, Cr: 21.00-23.00, Ni: 4.50-6.50, Mo: 3.00-3.50, Mn ≤ 2.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.030, S ≤ 0.020, N: 0.14-0.20
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength ≥ 620 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 450 MPa, Elongation ≥ 25%, Hardness ≤ 290 HB
Advantages
Excellent corrosion resistance (pitting, crevice, stress corrosion cracking) in chloride environments; high strength (twice that of austenitic grades like 316); good toughness and ductility; magnetic; good weldability and formability; cost-effective for high-stress, corrosive applications.
Applications
Marine equipment, offshore structures, chemical processing tanks and piping, desalination plants, oil and gas pipelines, and wastewater treatment equipment.
Equivalent Grades
AISI 2205, UNS S31803, EN 1.4462, GB 022Cr22Ni5Mo3N
