Description
Grade 304L is the low-carbon iteration of Grade 304, engineered specifically to eliminate intergranular corrosion (sensitization) in welded components. With a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, it prevents the formation of chromium carbides in the heat-affected zone during welding, eliminating the need for post-weld annealing-a critical advantage for large or complex welded structures. It retains the same chromium-nickel composition as 304, delivering identical general corrosion resistance and formability, while offering enhanced ductility and weld integrity. Unlike standard 304, 304L is the preferred choice for heavy-section fabrications, chemical processing equipment, and piping systems where post-weld corrosion resistance is non-negotiable, providing a reliable, cost-effective solution for welded applications.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C ≤ 0.03, Cr: 18.00-20.00, Ni: 8.00-11.00, Mn ≤ 2.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength ≥ 480 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 175 MPa, Elongation ≥ 40%, Hardness ≤ 200 HB
Advantages
Sensitization-resistant (no post-weld annealing required); superior intergranular corrosion resistance vs. 304; excellent weldability and ductility; non-magnetic; retains 304's general corrosion performance; ideal for welded structures.
Applications
Welded pressure vessels, chemical piping, pharmaceutical equipment, food processing pipelines, large-scale welded fabrications, and components requiring post-weld corrosion stability.
Equivalent Grades
AISI 304L, UNS S30403, EN 1.4307, GB 022Cr19Ni10, SUS304L
