Description
Grade 420 is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel, offering higher strength, hardness, and wear resistance than Grade 410 due to its increased carbon content (0.15-0.30%). It contains 12.0-14.0% chromium, providing better corrosion resistance than 410, especially in mild to moderate corrosive environments. Like other martensitic grades, 420 is magnetic and can be heat-treated (quenched and tempered) to achieve excellent mechanical properties, including high hardness and toughness. It has moderate weldability, but post-weld heat treatment is necessary to maintain its corrosion resistance and reduce brittleness. 420 is widely used in applications where both wear resistance and corrosion resistance are required, such as cutting tools, medical instruments, and industrial components. Its ability to be polished to a high finish also makes it suitable for decorative and aesthetic applications.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C: 0.15-0.30, Cr: 12.00-14.00, Mn ≤ 1.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030, Ni ≤ 0.75
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength ≥ 620 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 450 MPa, Elongation ≥ 12%, Hardness ≤ 223 HB (annealed); Tensile Strength ≥ 1050 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 750 MPa, Elongation ≥ 8%, Hardness ≥ 302 HB (heat-treated)
Advantages
Higher hardness and wear resistance than 410; better corrosion resistance than 410; heat-treatable for enhanced performance; magnetic; can be polished to a high finish; suitable for applications requiring both strength and corrosion resistance.
Applications
Knives, blades, surgical instruments, cutlery, mold parts, valves, pumps, gears, and components requiring high wear resistance and moderate corrosion resistance.
Equivalent Grades
AISI 420, UNS S42000, EN 1.4021, GB 20Cr13
