Description
Grade 430 is a ferritic stainless steel, one of the most commonly used non-austenitic grades, known for its good corrosion resistance, cost-effectiveness, and magnetic properties. It contains 16.0-18.0% chromium, providing better corrosion resistance than 409, 410, and 420, especially in atmospheric and mild chemical environments. Unlike martensitic grades, 430 cannot be heat-treated to enhance its strength, but it offers excellent formability, weldability, and machinability. It is also resistant to oxidation at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for high-temperature applications such as furnace parts and heat exchangers. 430 is widely used in consumer and industrial applications where cost is a key factor and extreme corrosion resistance (such as in marine environments) is not required. Its ability to be polished to a decorative finish also makes it popular in architectural and decorative applications.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C ≤ 0.12, Cr: 16.00-18.00, Mn ≤ 1.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030, Ni ≤ 0.75
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength ≥ 450 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 205 MPa, Elongation ≥ 22%, Hardness ≤ 183 HB
Advantages
Good corrosion resistance in atmospheric and mild chemical environments; cost-effective; excellent formability and weldability; magnetic; easy to machine and polish; good high-temperature oxidation resistance.
Applications
Architectural trim, decorative panels, kitchen appliances (sinks, ovens), food processing equipment, furnace parts, heat exchangers, automotive trim, and general-purpose components in mild corrosive environments.
Equivalent Grades
