Overview
Grade 420 is a martensitic stainless steel with higher carbon content than Grade 410, offering superior hardness and wear resistance after heat treatment. It contains 12.0-14.0% chromium, providing better corrosion resistance than Grade 410, especially in mild chemical and atmospheric environments. Its martensitic structure allows for quenching and tempering to achieve high hardness (up to 50 HRC), making it ideal for applications requiring sharp edges and wear resistance. Unlike austenitic grades, Grade 420 is magnetic and has good machinability when annealed, serving as a preferred choice for cutting tools and precision components.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C: 0.15-0.25, Cr: 12.00-14.00, Mn ≤ 1.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030, Ni ≤ 0.75
Typical Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition)
Tensile Strength (Rm): ≥ 550 MPa; Yield Strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 345 MPa; Elongation (A): ≥ 15%; Brinell Hardness (HB): ≤ 223
Core Advantages
Heat-treatable to high hardness and wear resistance; better corrosion resistance than Grade 410; good machinability in annealed state; magnetic; excellent edge retention for cutting tools; suitable for precision components.
Applications
Knives, scissors, surgical instruments, molds, valves, gears, and precision machine parts requiring high hardness and moderate corrosion resistance.
Equivalent Grades
EN 1.4021, UNS S42000, GB 20Cr13, SUS420J1
