Description
Grade 439 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel, designed to improve intergranular corrosion resistance and weldability compared to Grade 430. It contains 17.0-19.0% chromium, providing good corrosion resistance in atmospheric and mild chemical environments, and is magnetic. The addition of titanium (0.10-0.30%) prevents chromium carbide precipitation during welding and high-temperature exposure, eliminating the need for post-weld heat treatment in many applications. 439 offers excellent formability, weldability, and machinability, and has good high-temperature oxidation resistance. It is a cost-effective alternative to austenitic grades for applications where moderate corrosion resistance and good weldability are required. 439 is widely used in automotive exhaust systems, heat exchangers, and industrial components where welded structures are common and intergranular corrosion is a concern.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C ≤ 0.07, Cr: 17.00-19.00, Mn ≤ 1.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.040, S ≤ 0.030, Ti: 0.10-0.30, Ni ≤ 0.75
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength ≥ 450 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 205 MPa, Elongation ≥ 22%, Hardness ≤ 183 HB
Advantages
Better intergranular corrosion resistance than 430; excellent weldability (no post-weld heat treatment required in most cases); good formability and machinability; magnetic; cost-effective; good high-temperature oxidation resistance.
Applications
Automotive exhaust systems, heat exchangers, furnace parts, ductwork, welded structures, and general-purpose components in mild corrosive environments.
Equivalent Grades
AISI 439, UNS S43900, EN 1.4510, GB 022Cr18Ti
