Description
Grade 440A is a martensitic stainless steel, the lowest carbon variant among the 440 series (440A, 440B, 440C), offering a balanced combination of hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. It contains 16.0-18.0% chromium, which provides good basic corrosion protection in mild environments, and a carbon content of 0.60-0.75%-lower than 440B and 440C-making it slightly more formable and weldable than its higher-carbon counterparts. As a martensitic grade, 440A is magnetic and can be heat-treated (quenched and tempered) to achieve moderate hardness and strength, making it suitable for applications where wear resistance is required but extreme hardness is not necessary.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C: 0.60-0.75, Cr: 16.00-18.00, Mn ≤ 1.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030, Mo ≤ 0.75, Ni ≤ 0.75
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength ≥ 760 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 550 MPa, Elongation ≥ 10%, Hardness ≤ 269 HB (annealed); Tensile Strength ≥ 1100 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 860 MPa, Elongation ≥ 8%, Hardness 54-58 HRC (heat-treated)
Advantages
Balanced hardness and wear resistance; better formability and weldability than 440B/440C; good corrosion resistance in mild environments; magnetic; heat-treatable for enhanced performance; cost-effective; easier to machine than higher-carbon 440 variants.
Applications
Knives, blades, cutlery, valves, pumps, gears, bearings, surgical instruments, and general industrial components requiring moderate wear resistance and mild corrosion protection.
Equivalent Grades
AISI 440A, UNS S44002, EN 1.4116, GB 7Cr17
