Overview

Grade 440C is the high-carbon variant of the 440 family, renowned for its maximum wear resistance and hardness. It contains 0.95-1.20% carbon and 16.0-18.0% chromium, with molybdenum to enhance corrosion resistance and hardenability. Unlike 440A and 440B, Grade 440C achieves the highest hardness (up to 60 HRC) after heat treatment, making it ideal for applications requiring extreme wear resistance and edge retention. It is magnetic and has good machinability when annealed, though it requires careful heat treatment to balance hardness and toughness, as it is more prone to brittleness than lower-carbon 440 variants.

Chemical Composition (wt%)

C: 0.95-1.20, Cr: 16.00-18.00, Mo: 0.75-1.25, Mn ≤ 1.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030, Ni ≤ 0.75

Typical Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition)

Tensile Strength (Rm): ≥ 750 MPa; Yield Strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 500 MPa; Elongation (A): ≥ 10%; Brinell Hardness (HB): ≤ 269

Core Advantages

Maximum wear resistance and hardness among 440 variants; excellent edge retention for cutting tools; moderate corrosion resistance; magnetic; good machinability in annealed state; suitable for extreme wear-intensive applications.

Applications

High-performance knives, bearings, surgical instruments, molds, and precision components requiring extreme wear resistance and edge retention.

Equivalent Grades
