Overview

UNS S40900 is a low-chromium, titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel renowned for its excellent cost-performance ratio and reliable high-temperature oxidation resistance. As a ferritic grade, it exhibits magnetic properties and good thermal conductivity, distinguishing itself from austenitic stainless steels. The titanium addition stabilizes the alloy, preventing intergranular corrosion and enhancing weldability, making it easy to fabricate via cutting, forming, and welding processes. It is primarily designed for applications requiring moderate corrosion protection and high-temperature stability, serving as a cost-effective solution in automotive and general industrial fields where budget and basic performance are key considerations.

Chemical Composition (wt%)

C ≤ 0.08, Cr: 10.50-11.75, Ti: 0.15-0.35, Mn ≤ 1.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030, Ni ≤ 0.50, N ≤ 0.030

Typical Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition)

Tensile Strength (Rm): ≥ 448 MPa; Yield Strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 238 MPa; Elongation (A): ≥ 33%; Brinell Hardness (HB): ≤ 183

Core Advantages

Cost-effective with moderate corrosion resistance; titanium stabilization prevents intergranular corrosion and improves weldability; excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance (up to 760°C); good formability similar to carbon steel; magnetic with high thermal conductivity; suitable for mass production with low material costs.

Applications

Automotive exhaust systems (manifolds, mufflers, tailpipes, catalytic converters), home heating systems, heat exchanger tubing, electrical transformer cases, architectural trim, and general industrial components in mild corrosive environments.

Equivalent Grades

EN 1.4512, AISI 409, GB 022Cr11Ti, SUS409L
