When sourcing stainless steel for chemical, pharmaceutical, or marine applications, many engineers and buyers come across 1.4435 and 316L. Both grades belong to the austenitic stainless steel 316 family, but subtle differences in chemical composition and performance make them suitable for different environments.
This guide explains the key differences, answers common industry questions, and helps you choose the right grade for your project.
1. What is Stainless Steel 1.4435?
Stainless steel 1.4435 is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel with a high molybdenum content (2.5–3.0%), providing superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared to standard 316L. It is often used in high-purity chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech industries because of its excellent surface finish and corrosion resistance.
2. What is Stainless Steel 316L?
Stainless steel 316L (EN 1.4404 / UNS S31603) is the low-carbon version of 316, designed for improved weldability and reduced risk of sensitization. It offers excellent general corrosion resistance, good mechanical strength, and cost-effectiveness. Typical applications include marine equipment, food processing, piping, and tanks.
1.4435 material equivalent
1.4435 is a designation for 316L stainless steel, though it is a higher-alloyed, improved version of the standard 316L (1.4404). Both are low-carbon, austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steels.

Are 316L and 1.4435 materials easy to weld?
316L stainless steel, due to its low-carbon characteristics, is not prone to intergranular corrosion after welding. It is recommended to use 316L or 317L welding wires, and no special post-welding treatment is required to maintain corrosion resistance.
For 1.4435 stainless steel, it is recommended to use matching high-molybdenum welding wires (such as ER317L) and perform solution treatment after welding to restore corrosion resistance.
Why is 1.4435 more expensive than 316L?
Due to its complex alloy composition and production process. 1.4435 has a higher molybdenum content (2.5–3%) and a nickel content close to 14%. In addition, its production needs to meet strict standards for the urea industry and other fields (such as the RCC-M nuclear power specification), involving special heat treatment and quality inspection procedures, resulting in a significantly higher overall cost than ordinary 316L.
Can 316L and 1.4435 be interchangeable?
316L is a general-purpose low-carbon austenitic stainless steel, while 1.4435 (such as 316LMo) is a modified version with higher molybdenum and lower silicon content tailored for specific scenarios. Its corrosion resistance, especially weld seam corrosion resistance, and intergranular corrosion resistance are significantly superior to ordinary 316L. Although they may be partially substituted in conventional environments, 1.4435's performance cannot be completely replaced by 316L under strong corrosion or high-temperature and high-pressure working conditions.
