Stainless steel 304 vs 316 Steel

Stainless steel 304 vs 316 Steel
304 stainless steel is the most common type (containing 18% chromium and 8% nickel) and is suitable for general purposes; while 316 stainless steel contains added molybdenum (16% chromium, 10% nickel, and 2% molybdenum), making it perform better in harsh environments with high chloride content, such as marine or chemical applications. It offers better resistance to pitting corrosion but is also more expensive. 304 stainless steel is suitable for everyday use, while 316 stainless steel should be chosen for harsh corrosive environments where salt or strong corrosive chemicals are present.
Are both 304 and 316 stainless steel suitable for food use?
For food-grade applications, 304 stainless steel is the standard choice, being affordable and well-suited for general food contact. 316 stainless steel is a more premium option; due to the addition of molybdenum, it offers superior corrosion resistance, particularly against chlorides (salt) and strong acids/cleaning agents. Therefore, it is ideal for more corrosive environments such as dairy processing, marine environments, or high-salinity food processing. Both types of stainless steel are safe (non-reactive) and easy to clean, but 316 stainless steel is more expensive due to its superior performance.

What is 304 stainless steel?
304 stainless steel typically contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, and is therefore often referred to as 18/8 stainless steel. The chromium content gives the stainless steel its corrosion resistance and luster, while the nickel enhances the steel's formability and ductility. This alloy may also contain small amounts of carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, and possibly molybdenum to enhance its specific properties. The remaining component is primarily iron.
There are several variants of 304 stainless steel, such as 304L, which has a lower carbon content for better weldability and reduced risk of post-weld corrosion; and 304H, which has a higher carbon content and is suitable for high-temperature environments.
What is 316 stainless steel?
316 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel, similar to 304 stainless steel, but with the addition of molybdenum, which significantly improves its corrosion resistance, especially in chloride and other industrial solvent environments. The addition of molybdenum is crucial because it enhances corrosion resistance, particularly against chlorides and other industrial solvents. This makes 316 stainless steel suitable for harsh chemical or marine environments where higher chloride concentrations can lead to pitting and corrosion in less corrosion-resistant alloys.

Corrosion Resistance of 316 and 304 Stainless Steel
Corrosion Resistance of 304 Stainless Steel
SS304 stainless steel performs well in mildly corrosive chemicals, freshwater, and atmospheric environments. It is suitable for indoor and non-corrosive outdoor environments. However, prolonged exposure to salt, chlorides, or acidic environments may lead to corrosion. Therefore, it is not recommended for marine or coastal applications.
Corrosion Resistance of 316 Stainless Steel
Due to the presence of molybdenum, 316 stainless steel exhibits superior corrosion resistance. It can easily withstand saltwater, acidic compounds, and corrosive chemicals. This is why the performance difference between 316 and 304 stainless steel is significant in high-risk environments-especially where corrosion could affect safety, performance, or compliance.
As a stainless steel manufacturer located in China, Gnee Steel recommends SS 316 stainless steel for industries such as marine, chemical, and medical equipment, where corrosion-related failures are absolutely unacceptable.
Comparison of applications of 316 stainless steel and 304 stainless steel
Applications for 304 Stainless Steel
Most applications of 304 stainless steel are due to its high chromium content, which gives the alloy excellent corrosion resistance. These applications include:
• Manufacturing of kitchen appliances such as refrigerators and dishwashers
• Manufacturing of heat exchangers
• Commercial food processing equipment and kitchen accessories such as sinks and backsplashes
• Manufacturing of pots, pans, cutlery, and flatware
• Architectural panels
• Manufacturing of nuts, bolts, screws, and washers
• Manufacturing of beer, food, and pharmaceutical production equipment
In general, stainless steel is used in applications where ordinary carbon steel would easily corrode.
Applications of 316 stainless steel
316 stainless steel was originally developed for paper mills. Today, it is widely used in a variety of fields, including:
• Manufacturing of equipment for food, chemical, and petroleum production and processing
• Construction of laboratory workbenches and equipment
• Building panels in coastal areas
• Marine fittings
• Mining screens
• Kitchenware, sanitary ware, and sinks
• Piping
• Medical implants
316 stainless steel offers better corrosion resistance than ordinary stainless steel and generally exhibits higher strength at high temperatures.
