304 Stainless Steel (Common/General Purpose)
Key Feature: Good general corrosion resistance, low cost, easy to form/fabricate.
Composition: Contains Chromium (18%) & Nickel (8%) (often called "18/8").
Best For:
Kitchens & Food: Sinks, appliances, cookware (general use).
Indoors: Decorative trim, electrical enclosures, architectural fittings.
Water: Water piping, storage tanks.
Avoid: High chloride environments (like near the ocean) where it can pit.
316 Stainless Steel (Marine/Industrial)
Key Feature: Superior corrosion resistance, especially to chlorides (salt) and industrial chemicals, due to added Molybdenum (2-3%).
Composition: Similar to 304 but with added Molybdenum and slightly more Nickel.
Best For:
Marine/Coastal: Boat fittings, piers, coastal architecture (resists salt spray).
Chemicals: Chemical processing equipment, tanks, piping.
Medical/Pharma: Surgical tools, implants (due to chloride resistance).
Harsh Environments: Any application with high salt, de-icing chemicals, or corrosive agents.
