Overview
STS316 is a widely used austenitic stainless steel, distinguished by the addition of molybdenum (2.00-3.00%) which significantly enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-containing environments such as seawater and brine. With 16.00-18.00% chromium and 10.00-14.00% nickel, it forms a stable austenitic structure, making it non-magnetic in the annealed state. It offers excellent ductility, formability, and weldability, with no need for post-weld annealing in most cases. Compared to STS304, STS316 provides higher corrosion resistance and mechanical strength, making it suitable for harsh corrosive environments in marine, chemical, and food processing industries.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C ≤ 0.08, Cr: 16.00-18.00, Ni: 10.00-14.00, Mo: 2.00-3.00, Mn ≤ 2.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030
Typical Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition)
Tensile Strength (Rm): ≥ 520 MPa; Yield Strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 205 MPa; Elongation (A): ≥ 40%; Brinell Hardness (HB): ≤ 187
Core Advantages
Molybdenum addition enhances pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride environments; excellent general corrosion resistance to organic acids, alkalis, and neutral solutions; non-magnetic in annealed state; superior ductility and formability for complex fabrication; good weldability with no post-weld annealing required; higher strength and corrosion resistance than STS304.
Applications
Marine engineering components, seawater treatment equipment, chemical processing tanks and piping, food processing machinery, pharmaceutical equipment, coastal architectural structures, and medical devices requiring high corrosion resistance.
Equivalent Grades
EN 1.4401, UNS S31600, GB 06Cr17Ni12Mo2, AISI 316, SUS316
