Key Characteristics
Type: Martensitic (hardenable by heat treatment).
Composition: Contains at least 11.5% chromium for corrosion resistance.
Properties: Good balance of strength, hardness, and moderate corrosion resistance, enhanced by polishing and tempering.
Magnetic: Yes, due to its martensitic structure.
Properties after Heat Treatment (Hardened & Tempered)
High Strength & Hardness: Achieves high hardness (over Rc40) and tensile strengths, suitable for stressed components.
Enhanced Corrosion Resistance: Better protection in mild atmospheric, steam, and chemical conditions, especially when polished.
Machinability: Often supplied hardened but still machinable, though fabricating requires methods for poor weldability and final heat treatment.
Common Applications
Fasteners (bolts, nuts, screws).
Valves, pump shafts, and other components requiring strength and wear resistance.
Cutlery and surgical instruments (when further hardened).
Limitations
Less corrosion resistant than austenitic stainless steels (like 304).
Operating temperature range is limited; loses strength at very high temperatures and ductility at sub-zero temperatures.
