Description
UNS S40900 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel, engineered primarily for high-temperature applications that demand reliable thermal stability and moderate corrosion resistance. With a chromium content of 10.5-11.75%, it delivers basic protection against rust and oxidation in dry, mildly corrosive environments, while its ferritic microstructure ensures magnetic properties and excellent thermal conductivity. Unlike austenitic stainless steels, S40900 prioritizes heat resistance over extreme corrosion performance, making it a cost-effective choice for components exposed to repeated heating and cooling cycles. The addition of titanium prevents intergranular corrosion and enhances weldability, allowing for easy fabrication via welding, bending, and forming. It maintains stable performance at continuous service temperatures up to 800°C, making it a staple in automotive and industrial high-heat applications.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C ≤ 0.08, Cr: 10.50-11.75, Mn ≤ 1.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030, Ti: 6×C-0.70, Ni ≤ 0.50
Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength ≥ 415 MPa, Yield Strength ≥ 205 MPa, Elongation ≥ 20%, Hardness ≤ 183 HB
Advantages
Excellent high-temperature oxidation and thermal fatigue resistance; titanium-stabilized to avoid intergranular corrosion; cost-effective vs. austenitic grades; good weldability and formability; magnetic; ideal for continuous high-heat service.
Applications
Automotive exhaust systems, mufflers, catalytic converters, heat shields, furnace parts, industrial ductwork, and high-temperature components in mild corrosive settings.
