What is 1.4410 material?

1.4410 stainless steel, commonly known as Super Duplex 2507 or UNS S32750, is a super duplex stainless steel with a balanced ferritic-austenitic microstructure that offers exceptionally high strength and outstanding corrosion resistance. With its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, it provides superior resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking in aggressive chloride environments, making it the material of choice for the most demanding offshore, chemical processing, and desalination applications.

What is the operating temperature range for 1.4410 steel?

The recommended operating temperature range for 1.4410 is typically -50°C to 250°C. Below -50°C, the material undergoes a ductile-to-brittle transition. Above 250°C (particularly around 475°C), the material is susceptible to "475°C embrittlement" and the precipitation of the brittle Sigma (σ) phase, leading to a sharp decline in toughness.

Is 1.4410 steel difficult to weld?

The material has good weldability, but heat input and interpass temperature must be strictly controlled to maintain the balanced 50/50 austenite-ferrite microstructure. Excessive heat input can lead to the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds (Sigma phase), thereby reducing corrosion resistance and toughness.

Can 1.4410 replace 316L?

Yes; 1.4410 has nearly twice the strength of 316L and significantly superior corrosion resistance. However, it is more expensive and more difficult to process. 1.4410 is often selected as a replacement when 316L fails due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) or pitting corrosion.

In which industries is 1.4410 most commonly used?

Offshore oil & gas (subsea pipelines, wellhead components, flowlines)
Seawater desalination (brine side)
Chemical processing (chlorinated media)
Marine engineering (propeller shafts, piston rods, pump impellers)
Carbon capture and storage
Pulp & paper (bleach plants)
Power generation (condensers, desuperheaters)

What is the main difference between 1.4410 and 1.4462 ?

1.4410 has higher Chromium (25% vs 22%) and Molybdenum (4% vs 3%) content than 1.4462. This gives 1.4410 a much higher PREN value (>40) compared to 1.4462 (~34), offering superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater and high-chloride environments.
